Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Point Baker, AK.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Point Baker which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
