Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Delta, AL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Delta which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
