Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Eight Mile, AL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Eight Mile which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
