The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are programs that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Madison are programs which are officially permitted to distribute the drugs used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary benefits aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.
An opioid treatment center can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment program is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
