Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Pisgah, AL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Pisgah which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
