Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Scottsboro, AL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Scottsboro which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
