Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Bay, AR.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Bay that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
