The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug administered are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab centers in England are programs who are legally allowed to distribute the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary benefits in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab center can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been given.
