Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.
There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.
These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Mammoth Spring which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
