Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Pelsor, AR.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Pelsor which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
