The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug administered are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation centers in Blue are programs which are legally allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services aside from medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can get their basic approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the kind of certification it has been given.
