The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid treatment programs, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Catalina are programs that are legally permitted to distribute the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab center can receive basic approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment program is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification it has been granted.
