Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Baldwin Park, CA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Baldwin Park that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
