There are addiction programs available in or near Desert Center that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do deliver a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
