Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Dunlap, CA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Dunlap that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
