Medicaid is an insurance program for low-income households that because of the Affordable Care Act must provide insurance coverage for basic substance abuse treatment. Medicaid is currently the single largest payer for mental health services in the country, and is beginning to play a significant role in the reimbursements of substance abuse treatment services. Medicaid subscribers may want to bear in mind that while this is the case, not all facilities accept Medicaid. At facilities which do accept Medicaid, clients won't have co-payments in most states. For states which do charge co-pays, there are limits to the out-of-pocket expenses for subscribers. Rehabilitation services covered by Medicaid include intervention, screenings, medication maintenance, counseling, inpatient, detox, long-term residential, outpatient and behavioral health services.
