The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the administering of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Laporte are programs who are legally allowed to give out the drugs used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary benefits in addition to medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab facility can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch.
