Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Cos Cob, CT.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Cos Cob which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
