Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - East Woodstock, CT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in East Woodstock that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
