Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Hampton, CT.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Hampton which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
