The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug given are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services in addition to medicine like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab center can receive basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the type of certification it has been granted.
