Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Centerville, GA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Centerville which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
