Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Clayton, GA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Clayton which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
