Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Gibson, GA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Gibson that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
