The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehab facilities, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in East Peru are programs that are officially permitted to give out the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment facility can receive basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of certification that was given.
