The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Dakota are programs who are legally permitted to distribute the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also get ancillary benefits aside from medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab program can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office.
