The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Equality are programs who are legally allowed to dispense the medicines used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also get ancillary services in addition to medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab facility can receive basic approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years depending on the kind of accreditation it has been given.
