The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Lexington are programs who are officially allowed to give out the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services aside from medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation facility can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab center is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification that was given.
