If someone is getting outpatient detoxification they travel to the facility assisting them through detox every day or at minimum 5 days per week in most situations. Outpatient detox is either done in the evening or daytime, which makes it ideal for a person who must maintain a normal work or school schedule. Some facilities may also offer options to get detox treatment in either regular outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detox services and prevent relapse.
A standard amount of time individuals participate in outpatient detoxification is approximately a week. A number of facilities use medication assisted detoxification approaches while others provide medication free detoxification services. At times when medications are needed to avert life threatening withdrawal symptoms, as is the case with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are at times a problem. Alternatively, medical staff at the facility help clients manage their physical, emotional and psychological symptoms of withdrawal and cravings until they are detoxed and stabilized.
While outpatient detoxification in Plato Center is more flexible for apparent reasons, a very serious drawback is that clients are at a greater chance of relapse due to the access they maintain to drugs and alcohol. Ideally, clients will then go into a log-term or short-term recovery facility to deal with the reasons for their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detoxification is finished.
