The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to advance the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug prescribed are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation facilities in Rio are programs which are legally allowed to give out the drugs used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation center can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification that was given.
