DWI clients in treatment need to complete specific requirements to fulfill the conditions of their court sentencing. Treatment facilities that help satisfy these court requirements and conditions, which are usually much more lenient than normal sentencing which would include large fines and jail time, are offered in Standard to deliver alcohol education, therapy, and further evaluation for severe drug or alcohol issues.
Drug and Alcohol Education is a fundamental treatment tool used at rehab programs catering to DWI offenders. There are different levels of alcohol education which can differ by state. Level I education typically consist of 12 hours of group education related to the effects and dangers of drugs and/or alcohol. This is the what someone with a first offense or someone under the age of 21 will ordinarily be required to do. Level II courses would include both substance abuse education and therapy at a court approved program. How long an individual will be required to remain in therapy depends on various factors, which can be, for example, the number of DWI's the individual has had, and the severity of the offense. Most often clients will be required to take the Level II classes and therapy unless their blood-alcohol content was very low when they were stopped and there were no other serious infractions when the person was arrested.
