DWI clients in rehab need to complete specific requirements to fulfill the terms of their court sentencing. Treatment programs that help satisfy these requirements and terms, which are typically more lenient than traditional sentencing which would include large fines and jail time, are available in Virginia to deliver alcohol education, group counseling, and further assessment for severe substance abuse problems.
Drug and Alcohol Education is a primary treatment tool used at rehabs treating DWI clients. There are different levels of alcohol education which can differ by state. Level I education usually include 12 hours of group education related to the effects and dangers of alcohol and drugs. This is the what a person with a single conviction or someone under 21 will commonly be required to do. Level II classes would include both substance abuse education and group therapy in a court approved program. How long a person will need to be in therapy depends upon a few considerations, which can be, for example, how many DWI's the person has had, and the seriousness of the violation. Ordinarily, clients will be sentenced to the Level II DWI classes and therapy except for when their blood-alcohol level was extremely low when they were arrested and there weren't any other significant charges when the offender was arrested.
