The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to advance the mental health of the U.S.. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine given are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Brazil are programs who are legally permitted to distribute the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation center can get their initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab center is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the kind of accreditation that was granted.
