Regular outpatient rehab is mostly a less costly choice to more intensive outpatient centers or inpatient rehab, and is the lowest intensity of formal drug or alcohol treatment available in English. Some clients are attending treatment for the first time and have chosen regular outpatient because that is all they can afford and time commitment and logistically because of work, school or other obligations. In some cases, regular outpatient is a step down to service following treatment in a more intense outpatient center like a partial hospitalization or inpatient program.
Regular outpatient rehab services involve some kind of individual and group counseling services occurring once or twice a week. Facilities which include a wider array of services may include counseling (CBT) to help with relapse prevention and dual-diagnosis services to help respond to co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders. The length of time a person remains involved in treatment can change from client to client, and a client's improvement can be assessed every now and then and more rehab can be recommended based on these findings.
In some cases, a regular outpatient treatment program is going to be insufficient in intensity for a person who is facing a chronic substance abuse problem and has not gone to rehab before or has relapsed following prior outpatient treatment.
