Methadone maintenance is a type of treatment for individuals in Lebanon who are dependent and addicted to heroin or prescription pain killers. This type of treatment has been around for decades now, and the general notion is that individuals are no longer involved in the drug using activities that was driven by their addiction since the methadone that they are being administered satisfies cravings and prevents withdrawal symptoms. Like heroin, methadone is a full opioid agonist which activates the same neurons in the brain as heroin. This is what makes methadone so effective as a substitute for heroin and other prescription opioids.
Clients enrolled in methadone maintenance have to dose daily to avoid withdrawal symptoms from the methadone itself. This may be logistically and financially difficult, but some find it a better choice than a heroin addiction. Nevertheless, someone starting on methadone maintenance therapy should know that methadone detox is considered far more challenging than even heroin detox and withdrawal. Once on a moderate dosage of methadone, there are many detoxification programs that won't even accept methadone maintenance clients seeing that detoxification can be so difficult and rates of relapse are very high.
