Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.
There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.
These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Richmond which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
