Methadone maintenance is a method of treatment for individuals in Cuba who are dependent on heroin or prescription opioid medications. This form of treatment has been around for a very long time, and the general concept is that individuals are no longer wrapped up in the drug abusing behavior that was caused by their addiction since the methadone they are taking satisfies cravings and prevents withdrawal symptoms. Similar to heroin, methadone is a full opioid agonist and activates the same neurons in the brain as heroin. This is what makes methadone so powerful as a replacement for heroin and prescription pain killers.
People involved in methadone maintenance have to dose on a daily basis to avoid withdrawal symptoms from the methadone itself. This might be financially and logistically challenging, but some people feel it is a better choice than a heroin addiction. However, people beginning methadone maintenance therapy need to be aware of the fact that methadone detox is considered way more challenging than even heroin detoxification and withdrawal. Once on a moderate dosage of methadone, there are some detoxification facilities that will not take methadone maintenance clients since detoxification can be so challenging and rates of relapse are considerably high.
