One of the outpatient rehabilitation alternatives for individuals in Center who are struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed centers and doctors are certified to dispense certain meds to opioid dependent clients, many that are opioid-based themselves and are addiction. With low amounts however, the client does not experience high feelings but also does not experience intense cravings and isn't experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first medication tried for this reason, but there are alternative choices to select from.
Methadone is an opioid and is meant to be taken at an outpatient medical center certified to administer the med, that is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The cost of the drug is around $150 a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based drug, and is a pill often taken one day on, one day off. But unlike Methadone that can only be dispensed in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is about just under $300 monthly for the generic version of the med. There is also a type of buprenorphine containing the drug naloxone, that is a med which reverses the effects of opiates. A person consuming this formulation, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken every day, and costs about $450 per month. Naltrexone is another med used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it is an opioid blocker and isn't an opiate. A person has the choice to take this medication as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents a person from experience high feelings from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 per month.
