Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Clinton, KY.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Clinton which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
