The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Drug administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Eastern are programs who are officially allowed to dispense the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can receive initial certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of certification that was given.
