The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine prescribed are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation facilities in Fall River are programs which are legally allowed to give out the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get ancillary benefits aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.
An opioid treatment center can get their initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the type of accreditation that was given.
