Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Hyannis Port, MA.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Hyannis Port that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
