There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Rutland which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
