Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Brooklyn Park, MD.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Brooklyn Park which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
