The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehab facilities, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug administered are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services aside from medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

Opioid rehabilitation facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab center is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of accreditation it has been given.
