Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Keymar, MD.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Keymar which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
