Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Port Tobacco, MD.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Port Tobacco which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
