Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Scotland, MD.

There are programs offered in or near Scotland which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
