One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid rehab programs, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications administered are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. A requirement that MAT clients must also get ancillary services in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can get their initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification it has been given.
