The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab programs in South China are programs which are officially allowed to give out the drugs used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment facility can receive initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation that was given.
